Champions League Matchday Five Review

The penultimate round of matches in the Champions League group stage saw a number of teams secure spots in the next stage while others saw their exit from the competition confirmed.

E - Spartak Moskva remain in the hunt to reach the knockout stages despite being held to a 1-1 draw with Maribor. The Russians took the lead with eight minutes to go with Jose Mendes Andrade's effort before being pegged back in added time by a Jasmin Mesanovic leveller.

Liverpool missed the chance to secure qualification and win the group as they were held 3-3 by Sevilla. The Reds raced into a 3-0 advantage inside the first half hour as Roberto Firmino struck inside two minutes before striking a second on the half hour after Sadio ManĂ© doubled the lead on 22 minutes.Sevilla stunned the Reds with two goals in nine minutes from Wissam Ben Yedder, a 51st minute effort followed by a penalty on the hour. The comeback was completed in added time as Guideo Pizarro salvaged a point. 

F- Manchester City extended their perfect record to five wins with a 1-0 win over eliminated Feyernoord. City claimed the points late on with an 89th minute winner from Raheem Sterling.

Napoli remain in the hunt to advance after claiming a 3-0 win over fellow challengers Shakthar Donetsk. The sides played out an even first half before Lorenzo Insigne opened the scoring on 56 minutes and the points were wrapped up by two strikes in as many minutes late on from Piotr Zielinski and Dries Mertens. 


G- Besiktas sealed top spot in the group after claiming a 1-1 draw against FC Porto. The visitors went ahead on 29 minutes through Felipe Almeida Monteiro but were denied the win by an equaliser four minutes before half-time from Anderson Talisca. 

RB Leipzig remain in the hunt to advance after easing to a 4-1 win over eliminated AS Monaco.The Germans were gifted an early lead by a Nascimento own goal inside six minutes with Timo Werner doubling the lead three minutes later before slotting in a penalty for 3-0 on 31 minutes. Radamel Falcao cut the deficit to 3-1 two minutes before half-time with Naby Keita completing the rout in added time. 


H- Already qualified Real Madrid eased to a 6-0 hammering of eliminated Apoel Nicosia. Luka Modric put Real ahead on 22 minutes with Karim Benzema and Nacho extending the lead to 3-0 at the half-time break. 

Tottenham Hotspur wrapped up top spot in the group with a 2-1 win over eliminated Borussia Dortmund. The Germans opened the scoring on the half hour as Pierre Aubameyang struck, Spurs levelled through Harry Kane three minutes after half-time before Son Heung-Min sealed the win on 75 minutes. 

 
A- CSKA Moskva remain in the hunt to advance after claiming a 2-0 win that confirmed Benfica's elimination. Georgi Schennikov gave the hosts an early lead with a 13th minute opened before an own goal from Jardel on 56 minutes wrapped up the win for the Russians. 

Manchester United missed the chance to advance as they suffered a 1-0 loss to fellow challengers Basel. The crucial strike came on 89 minutes from Michael Lang and sets up a three way battle to claim the the two spots in the next stage with just one matchday left. 

B- Paris Saint Germain extended their perfect record to five wins with a 7-1 demolition of Celtic. The SPL side took a shock lead as Moussa Dembele struck inside the first minute with Nemymar levelling eight minutes later. before giving the hosts the lead on 22 minutes. Further strikes from Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe gave the hosts a 4-1 lead at the interval.  Three goals in five minutes completed the rout as Marco Verratti and Dani Alves struck either side of a second goal for Cavani.

Already qualified Bayern Munich secured a 2-1 win that left Anderlecht still awaiting their first point. Robert Lewandowski put the Germans ahead six minutes after half-time but they were pegged back by Sofiane Hanni's 63rd minute leveller. The win was sealed for the visitors with 13 minutes remaining after Corentin Tolliso's effort. 
 
C-Chelsea confirmed their place in the next stage with a 4-0 win over Qarabag. The hosts suffered an early blow with the dismissal of Sadiqov on 19 minutes with Eden Hazard converting the resulting penalty. Willian doubled the lead nine minutes before half-time with a Cesc Fabregas penalty and second strike from Willian in the second half completing the rout.

Atletico Madrid remain in the hunt to advance after a 2-0 win over fellow challengers AS Roma. A superb strike from Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring on 69 minutes before the Italians suffered a double blow late on with Silva Peres dismissed on 83 minutes with Kevin Gameiro confirming the win two minutes later. 

D- Juventus remain in the hunt to reach the next stage as they drew 0-0 with group winners Barcelona.  

Sporting Lisbon also remain in the hunt after a 3-1 win over Olympiakos. Bas Dost opened the scoring on 40 minutes with Cesar Zanaki doubling the lead three minutes later. A second strike from Dost made it 3-0 before Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe claimed a consolation for the Greeks four minutes from the end.
